Triathlon Swim Specificity
Swimming for triathletes is different from swimming for swimmers. Race-specific pool and open-water training for sprint to Ironman.
Overview
Triathletes swim differently. You're not racing a pure swim; you're swimming to exit the water in a state that preserves your bike and run. This changes everything about how you train: the stroke patterns you drill, the pace you target, the sets you prioritise, the energy you save.
This guide is for triathletes already comfortable with a Pool-to-Open-Water transition who want race-specific swim training that matches their triathlon goals. It covers distance-specific swim programming, wetsuit-adapted stroke modifications, and the tactical differences between a pool swimmer's approach and a triathlete's.
Golden Rule: The goal of the triathlon swim is not to win the swim. It's to exit the water without draining the reserves you need for a strong bike and run. Race the swim at 90% of your solo 1500m pace, not 100%.
Why Triathlon Swimming Is Different
| Pool swimmer | Triathlete swimmer |
|---|---|
| Turns every 50m | No turns in open water |
| Push off wall every length | Continuous swimming for 1-4 km |
| Clear visibility | Sighting required every 4-8 strokes |
| Lane isolation | Contact and drafting in a pack |
| No cycling or running after | Must preserve legs, shoulders, aerobic reserve for bike/run |
Training needs to prepare for these differences — not just build a faster 1500m pool time.
Understanding Swim Pacing for Tri
Your triathlon swim pace is slower than your max 1500m pace. Here's the approximate relationship:
| Your 1500m pool time | Your tri swim pace (per 100m) |
|---|---|
| 22:00 | 1:45-1:55 |
| 24:00 | 1:50-2:00 |
| 26:00 | 1:55-2:05 |
| 28:00 | 2:00-2:10 |
| 30:00 | 2:10-2:20 |
The 10-15 seconds per 100m difference preserves your legs. Triathletes who race their pool pace in the swim often come out of T1 and bike like they've already done a full session.
