Overview

Fitness gets you to the start line. Tactics get you across the line in the position your fitness deserves. Every race, sportive and club ride contains riders who are physically stronger than the winners but finish further back because they spent energy badly, got boxed in, attacked at the wrong moment, or panicked in the final kilometre.

This guide is for riders who already have a good FTP, ride with groups regularly, and want to race well — whether that's category racing, a cyclo-cross series, criteriums, or simply winning the club ride sprint point. It assumes comfortable group riding skills and a willingness to practice, because tactics only work if the bike handling is automatic.

Golden Rule: Races are won with the least energy spent. Every wasted watt in the first hour is a watt you won't have in the last kilometre. Hide, wait, strike.

Prerequisites

Comfortable riding in a pack at 40+ km/h
Can hold a wheel 10-20 cm behind without drifting
Basic race or chaingang experience
Familiarity with at least one race format (crit, road race, time trial, cyclo-cross)

The Physics of Drafting

Drafting is the largest tactical lever in cycling. Aerodynamic drag rises with the cube of speed — small speed gains cost disproportionately huge power.

Position	Power reduction vs solo
Solo, front	0% (baseline)
Behind one rider, 20 cm gap	25-30% reduction
Middle of a pack of 20	40-50% reduction
At the back of a pack	25-35% (more turbulent air)
Sheltered by a team train	35-45%

Read that again: sitting mid-pack halves your energy cost. This is why riders who can't do the watts on their own still win races — they outsource the watts to the pack.

Positional Awareness

The three zones within a group:

Front (top 10-15%)

When to be here:

Final 5-10 km of a flat race
Start of a key climb
Approaching a technical section or crosswind section
When a break is going

Costs: Highest energy. Cannot sit here the whole race.

Middle (sheltered but poised)

When to be here:

Majority of race time
Big flat sections
Anywhere you're waiting for something

Why: Maximum draft, good visibility, can move forward when needed.

Back (danger zone)

When to be here:

Hardly ever
Recovery after a big effort
If race is neutralised

Risks: Elastic-band effect on accelerations (you have to sprint to close gaps), first to be dropped, limited decision time.

Key Tactical Moments

The First 10 Minutes

In most races, the opening 10-15 minutes are the most chaotic. Attacks fly. Panic causes crashes. Your job:

Start in the front third of the grid (arrive early, warm up)
First 5 minutes: conserve, watch. Don't chase every attack.
If a break forms that you think will stay away: go NOW. Don't hesitate.
If attacks look like nothing: sit pretty, let others burn.

The mistake: racing the first 10 minutes as hard as the last 10. You'll have no legs for decisions later.

Covering Moves

Not every attack matters. Which do?

Attacks to cover:

From known strong riders
After a long period of slowing
On terrain that favours the attacker (climb, crosswind)
Combination moves (2+ riders going together)

Attacks to let go:

From riders you know are tactical suicide missions
Into a headwind (they'll come back)
Into nothing (flat, no terrain advantage)
Very early in a long race

How to cover cheaply: jump to the wheel of whoever is chasing, not to the front of the attack. Let someone else absorb the energy cost.

Surges and Accelerations

Midway through a race, surges are the secret pain. A surge is a 10-20 second attack that no one wins — but it drops the weaker riders.

Riding surges efficiently:

Don't respond from the back; you'll drop 10 places before you close
Accelerate EARLIER than you think — get to the front of the surge before it peaks
Short, sharp efforts (30+ sec in Z6) are the cost; pay them willingly

Crosswinds and Echelons

Where races actually explode.

In a crosswind, riders draft behind AND to the side of the wind direction. The "echelon" forms diagonally across the road. If you're caught on the wrong side (down-wind of the echelon), you're in the gutter, in no draft, and you're getting dropped.

Survival:

In crosswinds, always ride on the upwind side of the pack
If you see an echelon forming — commit, don't hesitate
Missing the echelon is usually race-over

Breakaways

The art of the break is doing less work than you think.

If you're in a break:

First 5 minutes: full commitment, get a gap, don't look back
After gap is established: rotation every 30-60 seconds
Don't pull through on headwind sections if you can help it — sit longer
2 km from the line: games start. Stop rotating. Mark the strongest rider.

If you're chasing a break:

Never chase alone unless you're >10% stronger than anyone else
Coordinate: find 3-5 riders willing to work, rotate efficiently
Keep the gap closing at a steady rate, don't surge-and-die

The Sprint / Finish

Final 2 km is everything.

Distance to line	What to do
3 km	Move into top 15. NOT top 3 — too early.
2 km	Conserve, follow moves but don't lead
1 km	Be in the top 10, on a fast wheel
500 m	Start positioning — inside line if possible
250 m	Uncorked. Full effort.
150 m	Peak speed
50 m	Finish strong even if you're not winning — every position matters

Sprinting cues:

Pick your moment from a wheel, not from open air
Jump when your chosen leader hesitates — that's your 2-second window
60 kph sprint feels identical to 62 kph sprint from inside the effort. Trust your training.

Group Ride & Chaingang Skills

Paceline Etiquette

Through-and-off rotation:

Pull at agreed pace (everyone holds same power, NOT same speed)
Move to the "off" side (upwind usually)
Let a steady stream of riders come past
Rejoin the back

Mistakes to avoid:

Surging through: you'll fragment the line
Slow pulls: you're taking free ride and leaving others frustrated
Not signalling: point out potholes, call "car back/up," warn for obstacles

The Half-Wheel

Don't let your front wheel drift past the rider next to you in a pair. They'll match you, you'll match them, you'll accelerate together until someone cracks. Always ride shoulder-to-shoulder exactly.

When to Pull Through, When to Sit

In a chaingang or race break, pulling through isn't automatic. Consider:

Pull through when:

You're fresher than the pack
You're trying to maintain a break
You're the strongest rider and want to shape the race

Skip a turn (don't pull through) when:

You've just done a big effort
Wind direction makes it disproportionately costly
You're saving for a specific moment later

Don't over-apologise — strong riders sit and pull strategically, it's part of the game.

Race Types & Key Tactics

Criterium (short loops, 30-90 min)

Aggressive start, position is everything
Corners: enter wide, apex tight, exit full power
Laps matter — know when the prime/final sprint is
Don't burn matches mid-race; prime laps and final laps are where it counts

Road Race (multi-lap or point-to-point)

Conservative first third
Active middle — cover moves, test legs
Aggressive final 20%: break opportunities, key climbs, sprint setup

Time Trial (solo)

Tactical content minimal — it's pacing and aero
First km: discipline, don't go out too hot
Middle: steady, tight aero position
Last km: wind it up, commit everything

Cyclo-Cross

Explosive start is CRITICAL (60-90 seconds at max to hold position)
Technical lines in rapid decision cycles
Running sections: practise the mount/dismount
Last lap: race sharpens from the back

Mental Game

Racing is nervous system. Even riders with strong FTPs blow up because they can't stay calm when decisions stack up.

Strategies:

Pre-plan key moments (the climb at km 40, the crosswind section, the final 2 km sprint setup)
"One move at a time" — don't think about the whole race, think about the next 5 minutes
Accept losing positions to save matches for the right moment
After a race, review: write down 3 tactical decisions you'd make differently

Common Mistakes

Racing the first hour like the last hour. Early aggression rarely pays; late aggression does.
Covering every attack. You can't. Let teammates or other strong riders do work. Pick your moves.
Never getting to the front. The back of the pack feels safe. It's not — you're too far from decisions.
Bad positioning on climbs. Drift too far back at the base, you'll need to close 2% gaps all the way up. Start climbs in the top 15.

What's Next

The tactics won't show up overnight — it takes 6-10 races to build true pack awareness. But once it clicks, you'll finish races you used to struggle in, and you'll do so on less fitness than the riders around you.
