Thru-Hike Preparation: UK Long Distance Paths

A 16-week plan to prepare for a UK thru-hike — West Highland Way, Pennine Way, Cape Wrath Trail. Fitness, kit and logistics.

Advanced

Overview

A UK thru-hike — walking a long-distance path end to end over days or weeks — is one of the most rewarding endurance challenges available. The West Highland Way (154 km / 96 mi over 7-9 days), Pennine Way (429 km / 268 mi over 16-20 days), Cape Wrath Trail (383 km / 238 mi over 14-18 days) each demand serious preparation that most people underestimate.

This plan assumes you'll attempt a 1-3 week thru-hike with a pack weight of 8-15 kg, carrying either everything you need (self-supported) or stopping at B&Bs/bothies (semi-supported). It combines progressive fitness work, kit testing, and specific preparation for weather, navigation, and the unique mental challenge of walking every day for weeks.

Golden Rule: Finishing a thru-hike is 40% fitness, 30% kit that works, 20% mental resilience, and 10% weather luck. Training for the first three well reduces how much the fourth matters.

Which Trail, Which Preparation?

Trail Length Days Difficulty Remoteness
Hadrian's Wall Path 135 km 6-7 Moderate Low
West Highland Way 154 km 7-9 Moderate Medium
Great Glen Way 125 km 5-6 Moderate Low-medium
Coast to Coast 309 km 13-14 Hard Low
Pennine Way 429 km 16-20 Hard Medium-high
South West Coast Path 1014 km 50-60 Hard Low (but relentless)
Cape Wrath Trail 383 km 14-18 Very hard Very high

Different trails need different emphasis — the West Highland Way has good accommodation options and relatively forgiving terrain; the Cape Wrath Trail has bog, no paths, no shelter, and requires competent navigation. Adjust this plan's mental and kit sections accordingly.
